Background
Cardiac troponin T (cTnT) is a protein found in cardiac muscle cells, specifically in the contractile apparatus known as the thin filaments. It is one of three subunits of the troponin complex, along with cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and cardiac troponin C (cTnC). Troponin T binds to tropomyosin, a protein that covers the binding sites on actin, to facilitate muscle contraction. It is released into the bloodstream when cardiac muscle cells are damaged or die. cTnT is highly specific to cardiac muscle injury or death and is therefore a widely used biomarker for diagnosing acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
