Background
Chitinase-3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1) also known as YKL-40, Chondrex and HC-gp39 is a non-enzymatic protein that binds to chitin, heparin, and hyaluronic acid. CHI3L1 plays a crucial role in protecting against pathogens, antigen-induced and oxidant-induced injury responses, inflammation. It promotes tissue repair and remodelling by regulating a variety of essential biological processes. These include oxidant injury, apoptosis, pyroptosis, inflammasome activation, Th1/Th2 inflammatory balance, M2 macrophage differentiation, dendritic cell (DC) accumulation, TGF-β1 expression, ECM regulation, and parenchymal scarring. The potential of CHI3L1 as biomarker is being studied in connection to variety of diseases such as asthma, arthritis, sepsis, diabetes, liver fibrosis, coronary artery disease and cancers.
