Background

Cystatin C belongs to the cysteine protease inhibitor family, first described in 1968. It is a small protein (13.4 kDa) produced by all nucleated cells in the body and it is removed from the bloodstream by the kidneys. Therefore, cystatin C levels in body fluids are useful indication of how well the kidneys are functioning. In clinical settings, cystatin C is used as a biomarker for chronic kidney disease or renal failure. It is a more sensitive marker than the widely used serum creatine for measurement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR), as cystatin C concentration in the serum is not affected by sex, race, age nor muscle mass. In addition to its use in kidney disease, cystatin C levels have also been associated with increased risk of death and cardiovascular events, like heart failure, in elderly persons.
