Background

Fatty acid binding protein 3 (FABP3) is a small (15 kDa) cytoplasmic protein that is expressed in various tissues, including the heart and skeletal muscle. It belongs to the family of fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) and plays a crucial role in the metabolism of fatty acids by binding to and transporting long-chain fatty acids to the mitochondria for β-oxidation or storage. FABP3 has been identified as a promising biomarker for several cardiovascular diseases, including acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and heart failure. In cases of AMI, the rapid increase of FABP3 levels in the bloodstream establishes it as an excellent early diagnostic marker. Similarly, elevated levels of FABP3 have been observed in patients with heart failure, suggesting that it could be used as a prognostic marker.
