Background
Galectin-3 (gal-3) is a carbohydrate-binding protein that is involved in a variety of cellular processes, including inflammation, cell proliferation, and apoptosis. It is expressed in all types of immune cells, endothelial cells, sensory neurons and epithelial cells. Elevated levels of gal-3 have been associated with cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, viral infection and cancer. According to the 2017 Guidelines of the American Heart Association, gal-3 is recommended as a biomarker to aid in the risk stratification of patients with heart failure.
