Background

IGFBP1, or Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein 1, is a 25 kDa protein that belongs to the IGFBP family, which regulates the actions of insulin-like growth factors (IGFs). It is mainly produced and secreted by the liver and is involved in modulating biological activities of IGF-s by binding and sequestering them into the circulation, thereby influencing cell growth, proliferation, and metabolism. IGFBP1 plays a crucial role in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism and is associated with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, all of which contribute to the development of NAFLD. Additionally, its altered expression has been linked to certain cancers, such as breast, prostate, and ovarian cancer, indicating its potential as a diagnostic or prognostic marker in these diseases.
