Background
Leptin is a 16 kDa protein hormone mainly secreted from the adipose tissue. Its main function is to bind with receptors in the hypothalamus which results in suppression of hunger, stimulation of satiety and increase in energy expenditure. In addition to its role in energy homeostasis, leptin is involved in various physiological processes, including reproduction, immunity, and bone metabolism. Leptin might serve as a novel biomarker since it is associated with diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and neurodegenerative diseases.
