Background

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a heme-containing enzyme primarily found in neutrophils, monocytes, and some tissue macrophages. The MPO protein is covalently bound tetramer, with a total molecular weight of 150 kDa., containing two halves of hemi-MPO, both composed of two heavy (60 kDa) and two light (15 kDa) components. It plays a crucial role in the innate immune system's defence against microbial pathogens. Upon activation, neutrophils, and monocytes release MPO, which generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) by utilizing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and chloride ions (Cl-) present in the surrounding environment. These ROS possess strong microbicidal properties and help eliminate invading microorganisms. MPO has gained considerable attention as a diagnostic and prognostic marker in various diseases, including inflammatory disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and certain types of cancer. In addition, elevated MPO levels have been associated with increased cardiovascular risk and adverse outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndromes. MPO has been proposed as a biomarker for early diagnosis, risk stratification, and monitoring of disease progression in cardiovascular disorders.
