Background

Myoglobin, an oxygen- and iron-binding protein with a molecular weight of 18 kDa, is abundantly present in skeletal and heart muscles. After myocardial injury, myoglobin is rapidly released into the bloodstream and can be detected after 30 minutes, making it a sensitive biomarker. In patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), myoglobin levels are Elevated and therefore, it has been used as a marker for early onset. In AMI patients the concentration of myoglobin in the bloodstream peaks at 12 hours and is removed by the kidney within 24 hours. Myoglobin is a non-specific biomarker and mostly used to exclude the diagnosis of AMI. Myoglobin antibodies are usually part of a multimarker panel with for example cTnI, cTnT and CK-MB.
