Background

Presepsin is a promising biomarker for the diagnosis and management of sepsis, a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body's response to infection. Presepsin is part of the of soluble CD14 subtype, which is involved in the recognition of bacterial pathogens by the immune system. Presepsin is released into the bloodstream in response to an infection and can be measured through a blood test. Studies have shown that presepsin levels were significantly higher in sepsis patients at the intensive care unit (ICU) compared to patients who were not admitted to the ICU. Presepsin levels might also be used as a predictor of mortality in sepsis patients. Additionally, presepsin can indicate the severity of sepsis and play an important role in monitoring the disease and tracking response to treatment.
