Background
ProBNP (pro-brain natriuretic peptide) is a precursor molecule synthesized and released by the heart in response to increased cardiac wall stress and stretching. Upon release, proBNP is cleaved into its biologically active form, BNP, and its inactive form, NT-proBNP2. NT-proBNP, or N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide, circulates as a stable fragment in the bloodstream. In contrast, BNP, which stands for B-type natriuretic peptide, is a 32-amino acid-long peptide located at the C-terminus of proBNP and is known to be less stable in the bloodstream. Both NT-proBNP and BNP serve as crucial biomarkers for diagnosing and assessing heart-related conditions, including heart failure, myocardial infarction, and other cardiac abnormalities.
