Background
Procalcitonin (PCT) is a protein member of the calcitonin superfamily that holds immense potential as a diagnostic tool for sepsis. Sepsis, a critical global healthcare issue, triggers systemic inflammation throughout the body in response to microbial infection, ultimately leading to organ dysfunction. The rapid elevation of procalcitonin levels during an infection, coupled with its strong correlation with the severity of illness, positions it as an optimal biomarker for identifying bacterial infections. Furthermore, procalcitonin levels can be utilized not only for assessing response to antimicrobial therapy, but also for diagnosing secondary inflammations, identifying renal involvement in pediatric urinary tract infections. The CALC-1 gene encodes the precursor of procalcitonin, which consists of 116 amino acids. Through successive cleavages, three distinct molecules are formed: a 57-amino acid N-terminal fragment, a 32-amino acid calcitonin molecule, and a 21-amino acid katacalcin molecule. These intricate processes contribute to the functional diversity and complexity of procalcitonin within the body's biological systems.
