Background

HIV-1 p24 is a crucial protein component of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), the virus responsible for causing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is encoded by the Gag gene and serves as a fundamental building block for the viral core capsid. Due to its consistent presence in HIV-1, p24 has become an essential diagnostic marker for detecting HIV infection. Diagnostic tests, such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) and rapid antibody tests, are specifically designed to detect antibodies that the patient's immune system produces in response to HIV-1 p24 protein. This antibody detection is a crucial step in diagnosing HIV infection. However, in the early stages of HIV infection, when the patient's immune response is still developing and antibodies may not be present in sufficient quantities for detection, the direct detection of p24 antigen in the bloodstream becomes exceptionally valuable. The current recommendations advocate the use of antibody-antigen assays, which can detect p24 and the antibody response to the virus. These assays are favoured for HIV screening due to their capability to shorten the time between infection and a positive HIV test result to less than one month.
